We live in a world where there is so much materialism, even in Christian circles and some people who claim to be the Lord’s Disciples are exceedingly rich. How can that be? Jesus clearly told us that we can’t have two masters; it is either God or money.
See Matthew 6: 24 (KJV) No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
We both believe that we need to make Jesus the centre of our lives and to love God before anyone or anything and to put him at first place in our lives. Do we believe that we own our property, car, money, etc. or do we believe that nothing belongs to us but that it all belongs to God and that we are simply stewards looking after everything for the Lord Jesus Christ? One day we will have to give an account of how we led our lives and looked after the Lord’s belongings including the earth. If we have the attitude that nothing belongs to us but to the Lord Jesus Christ, it helps us to detach ourselves from worldly goods and so give God 100 percent of what we own. We therefore become more generous because we believe that it is the Lord’s money and not ours. The closer we get to the Lord the more we detach ourselves from materialism. When we go shopping, we should ask the Lord to hold the purse strings so that we buy only what we need, rather than be greedy and go on a spending spree.
When you get closer to Jesus, no money or gold can compare with the love that Jesus has for us, and our love for him. The most important thing for us is to love God and our neighbour and to abide in love
See 1 John 4:16King James Version (KJV) 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
It is focussing on relationships with God and other people and spreading the Lord’s love and evangelising, which matters the most. We realize that we won’t be bringing our material possessions to Heaven, but we will only bring the person we have been transformed into after having been purchased by Jesus’ Blood and having become born again.
Let us therefore refuse to compromise and not have two masters God and money and not be spendthrifts but put God in first place before money or anything materialistic on earth.
